BILOXI, Mississippi (WLOX) – A spectacular rescue on the Choutacaboufa River took place on Wednesday.
A boater gave two men advice on where to find a good fishing hole, and they repaid the kindness by saving his life.
Vondee Pittman Jr. and Chris Weary were looking for new places to try their luck fishing on Wednesday morning.
They ran into another boater checking his trotting lines near Hurricane Hole.
The man suggested a place for them to try, but also mentioned that he had engine problems.
“The engine went up pretty high and when it took off it was heading towards a set of bushes and it kind of cut the boat hard to avoid those bushes,” Weary said.
Tired said the man leaned down to avoid being hit, but what he didn’t know was that his fiberglass boat was now heading straight for the opposite shore.
“And when he lifted his head, he was walking towards a tree,” Weary said.
The force of the crash threw the man to the shore. Pittman and Weary immediately went to help.
“He was unconscious for a minute, then came to himself. Then he stopped breathing, ”Weary said.
“He did chest compressions,” Pittman added.
“I gave him cuts and he came back and started talking to us again,” Weary continued.
Weary had been trained in CPR a few years ago for a job as a bus driver.
“Kind of grateful for it today. Like I said, he stopped breathing, and it kind of kicked off, ”he said.
Pittman, a 22-year-old army veteran with combat experience, brought a sense of calm to the chaotic situation.
“I’m glad he’s here because I kind of had to lean on him. I panicked a bit at first and I’m glad he’s here. I’m really glad he’s here, ”Weary said.
The victim was glad the two men were there. He was alert when paramedics arrived at the Cedar Lake boat launch to treat him for a head and arm injury.
“Just in the right place at the right time,” Pittman said. “I’m glad we were able to help you. “
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks is investigating the accident.
