“It was the greatest adventure I think we could ever dream of”, exclaims Ellen mirojnick, costume designer for “Bridgerton”. Mirojnick, winner of an Emmy for her costumes in “Behind the Candelabra” in 2013, and fellow designer John W. Glaser created a myriad of vintage looks for the Netflix drama from Shonda rhimes on romance in Victorian England. However, like the diverse cast of the series, Mirojnick and Glaser brought a modern twist to the show’s lavish period wardrobe. Watch our exclusive chat with Mirojnick and Glaser above.

Glaser admits that the look of the Bridgerton family came from a rather unexpected source – French macarons. “The Bridgertons were made from French macarons, those sweet little dusty pastel colors,” he says. “There isn’t a color of button you can’t use.” The rival Featherington family, a representation of “new silver,” was represented by what Glaser calls “acid fruit colors,” a style he said fits perfectly with the family’s goals. “They were trying to be seen, trying to be noticed, trying to prove themselves,” he explains.

For the show’s cast, the creators say it was important that their wardrobe felt different from standard period clothing. “The main cast was young and expected a world like Jane Austen, and what I mean by that is something we’ve seen before,” she says. “So once they figured out that this wasn’t going to be a typical period piece, they just engaged in a way that was one hundred percent present, one hundred percent collaborative.”

Neither Mirojnick nor Glaser can pick a favorite from the hundreds of costumes they’ve designed for the series. “It’s like a feast, how you can eat it,” says Mirojnick. “It’s a banquet that you can just watch with the biggest smile.” Glaser adds, “That’s why there weren’t a lot of pieces you could choose from and say it was great because every piece was worked the same way.”
