America’s largest boat and fishing retailer brings back annual life jacket drive with national trade-in program May 20-27
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida., May 6, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — West Marine, America’s leading retailer of supplies for the sailing, boating and fishing communities, is commemorating National Water Safety Month by encouraging boaters of all ages to understand the rules and responsibilities associated with safe boating practices. In an effort to train new boat owners and re-educate long-time enthusiasts, West Marine is partnering with America’s Boating Club, a boating and safety education organization, for a series of free, interactive boating safety seminars held at many of its marine centers across the country. on Friday and Saturday May 20 and 21, of 11pm-5pm in local markets. Americans’ interest in outdoor leisure activities continues to grow as many people who were looking for new ways to practice social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic have fallen in love with their new passions in and around water, and continue to enjoy it. According to a study by Statista, the number of recreational boats registered in the United States reached nearly 12 million in 2020, with Florida listings at the top of the list. West Marine is aiming for a fun summer through educational efforts to make this season safe for both new and experienced boaters. As part of the hands-on training opportunities at this month’s Water Safety Interactive Seminars, consumers will be able to hone their skills with a unique virtual trainer.
In addition to this month’s safety seminars, West Marine is also encouraging consumers to wear life jackets whenever they are in, on, or near the water. When you’re fishing, boating, or just wading, you might not have time to put one on in an emergency. A recent US Coast Guard report found that of all people known to have died by drowning in 2020, 86% were not wearing a life jacket or other flotation device.
