In this exclusive video, Trevor E. Angell, MD, speak with Caroline T. Nguyen, MD, on the relationship between thyroid autoimmunity and female fertility.

Angell and Nguyen are both in the division of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, where Angell is assistant professor of clinical medicine and associate medical director of USC Thyroid Diagnostic Center, and Nguyen is assistant professor of clinical medicine and obstetrics and gynecology. Nguyen is also a endocrine today Member of the editorial board.

Thyroid autoimmunity is the most common autoimmune disease in women of childbearing age, and the condition has been associated with subfertility and miscarriages. The mechanisms are unclear. Nguyen explains why she recommends testing for thyroid peroxidase antibodies for women who are having difficulty conceiving.
