The Singapore Paper Rex are a VALORANT team known for bringing big personality to every stage they play on, especially when it comes to their in-game leader Benedict “Benkai” Tan. He delighted commentators, spectators and fellow contestants with the costumes he wears when he takes the stage at LAN events, and this year’s VCT Masters 1 was no different.

Nor is it a new tradition. Benkai showcased his antics to the world at Masters Berlin 2021, where he took the stage for the first time in double shirts and a bathrobe, brushing teeth for the second. His most recent international walkouts kept the trend alive, so we decided to do the hard work of ranking them from worst to best.

4. Penguin Costume

The penguin costume that Benkai wore during PRX’s lower bracket match against The Guard was cute, especially when Benkai – who was still wearing it – hugged The Guard’s Ha “Sayaplayer” Jung-woo. Beyond that, it was probably a good way to stay warm while gaming, as LAN event stages are notoriously chilly. His arctic outfit probably made him feel right at home, since he and Paper Rex were the ones who sent The Guard home in this match.

3. Skater Boy

For what would be his final Masters 1 2022 outing, Benkai skateboarded onto the stage. While it’s not as visually interesting or over the top as the Viking costume or the Penguin costume, it still deserves a shout out for the commitment to the bit and the use of props. Benkai executes his jokes thoroughly, even though he left the audience guessing what he would do next for this tournament.

2. Viking costume

Dressing up as a Viking for PRX’s match against Korea’s DRX is arguably one of the most intricate costumes Benkai chose during this event. He had to wear the armor chest piece, the horned helmet, and the very rough fake beard, rather than an actual or glorified hoodie.

1. Cameraman

Benkai demonstrated the pinnacle of his costume-based humor during player departures for PRX’s match against G2 esports in the lower bracket of the Masters 1 qualifiers. G2’s Auni “AvovA” Chahade walked out, seemingly alone, at except for a cameraman wearing a black hoodie and sweats. Said cameraman followed AvovA as he took the stage, doing an exaggerated flex, before pivoting into Benkai’s empty space next to player G2. He faced the camera, revealing Paper Rex’s IGL wearing a fake beard and flashing a peace sign.

This exit gag has to take the cake in this ranking because of the effort and collaboration that clearly went into it. Not only did Benkai find a clever way to reuse his Viking beard, but he was also able to get his opponent involved. This spirit of competitor fun started this match off with impeccable vibes and kept Benkai a fan favorite when it came to stage appearances.

As for Benkai, he revealed his personal favorite of these looks during a press conference.

“I’m thinking of the Vikings,” he said. “The Viking was the most thematic depending on where we were.”
